Terms of Service

By installing the Goldberg app to your Discord account, running any of its commands, or using this website, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms.

If you are using the Service on behalf of an organisation, you confirm that you have authority to bind that organisation, and “you” refers to both you and it.

Goldberg is a Discord user app that runs open-source intelligence lookups. When you invoke a command, it queries publicly accessible sources and public APIs in real time and returns what those sources say, as a reply in the channel you ran it from.

Goldberg is a tool, not an investigator. It does not verify, corroborate, or vouch for the information it surfaces. It does not maintain its own database of people, and it does not build profiles. It reports what public sources return at the moment you ask.

Goldberg is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Discord Inc., Netflix, the television series You, or any of the platforms it queries.

You must be at least 13 years old, and at least the minimum age required to use Discord in your country, whichever is higher. You must not use the Service if you have previously had your access revoked, or if applicable law bars you from doing so.

Goldberg installs to your Discord account rather than to a server. The commands travel with you and are available in servers, direct messages, and group chats, subject to what Discord permits in each context.

You are responsible for everything done through your Discord account using the Service. Keep your account secure. If you believe someone else has used your account to run lookups, tell us.

The Service applies rate limits. You must not attempt to circumvent them, automate the app outside of normal Discord usage, or run it through scripts, self-bots, or multiple accounts to increase your throughput.

Goldberg exists for legitimate open-source intelligence and security research. Acceptable uses include:

• Auditing your own digital footprint to see what is publicly exposed about you.
• Checking your own accounts and addresses against breach data so you can rotate what is compromised.
• Investigations you are authorized to carry out, including work under a penetration testing agreement, a security engagement, or an employer's remit.
• Screening a suspicious Discord account in a community you moderate.
• Triaging a suspicious domain or link before anyone clicks it.
• Verifying an identifier such as a Minecraft UUID for a whitelist or a ban list you administer.

The common thread is that you either have a right to the information or a legitimate defensive reason to look. If neither is true, do not run the command.

You must not use the Service to:

• Do anything illegal under the law that applies to you or to the person you are searching.
• Stalk, harass, monitor, intimidate, or track any person without their consent. This includes tracking a partner, a former partner, a family member, a colleague, or anyone you have been asked to leave alone.
• Compile, publish, or share a dossier on a person, whether or not you call it doxxing.
• Locate or identify a person in order to threaten, extort, defame, or turn up in front of them.
• Support swatting, harassment campaigns, brigading, or coordinated abuse of any kind.
• Circumvent a block, a restraining order, a ban, or any measure someone has taken to keep distance from you.
• Screen people in a way that produces unlawful discrimination, including in employment, housing, credit, or insurance decisions.
• Carry out consumer background screening governed by the US Fair Credit Reporting Act or equivalent laws elsewhere. The Service is not a consumer reporting agency and its output must not be used to make eligibility decisions about anyone.
• Attack, probe, or gain unauthorized access to any system, network, or account, including as reconnaissance for an intrusion you are not authorized to attempt.
• Target minors.
• Scrape, resell, redistribute, or commercially exploit the output of the Service, or use it to build a competing dataset.
• Overload, disrupt, reverse engineer, or interfere with the Service or the sources it queries.
• Misrepresent the Service's output as verified, official, or endorsed by us.

This list is illustrative, not exhaustive. Conduct that is obviously in the same spirit is also prohibited.

When you search for information about another person, you choose who to search and why. We provide a tool; you direct it. In data protection terms that generally makes you a controller for that processing, and it makes you responsible for having a lawful basis, a legitimate purpose, and any consent or authorization the law requires.

The purely personal or household exemption in data protection law is narrow. It will not cover surveillance of another person, and you should not assume it protects you.

You accept full responsibility for the consequences of your lookups and for anything you do with the results. We are not a party to your investigation and do not supervise it.

Results come from third-party sources and are provided as they are returned. We do not verify them. They may be incomplete, out of date, ambiguous, or wrong.

In particular: a username matching on a site does not mean the same person owns every match, an absent result does not prove absence, breach data reflects historical exposure rather than current compromise, and geolocation identifies a host rather than a person.

Do not treat the output as evidence, and do not act against anyone on the strength of it alone. Corroborate before you draw a conclusion that affects somebody.

Answering a lookup requires sending your query to external services, which handle it under their own terms and may log it. A lookup is not anonymous with respect to the sources being queried.

We do not control those services, are not responsible for their content, availability, or practices, and may change which ones we use at any time. Where a source imposes its own terms on end users, you must comply with them.

Using the Service means using Discord. You must comply with the Discord Terms of Service, the Discord Community Guidelines, and any server rules that apply where you run a command. Nothing in these Terms overrides them.

Discord may change what it exposes to user apps, or restrict the Service, at any time and without notice to us.

The Service is provided on a best-effort basis with no uptime guarantee. We may add, change, restrict, or remove commands and features, adjust rate limits, or suspend the Service entirely, at any time and without notice.

The Service is free to use. Nothing here obliges us to keep it running, maintained, or available to you.

The Service, this website, and the name and branding of Project Goldberg belong to us or our licensors. These Terms grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Service as intended, and nothing more.

You must not copy, modify, distribute, sell, sublicense, or create derivative works from the Service, nor remove or obscure any attribution in it.

Information returned by the Service belongs to whoever holds rights in it at source. We claim no ownership over it and grant you no rights in it.

We may restrict, suspend, or permanently revoke your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, if we believe you have broken these Terms, if we receive a credible report that you are using the Service to harass or track someone, if your use threatens the Service or the sources it depends on, or if we are required to by law.

Where access is revoked, we keep a record of your Discord user ID and the reason for as long as the revocation stands, so that it can be enforced. You may contact us to appeal, and we will review it.

You may stop using the Service at any time by removing the app from your Discord account. Sections 7, 8, 12, and 15 through 19 survive termination.

If you believe someone is using the Service to harass, stalk, or track you or another person, report it to us in the support server. We will investigate and revoke access where these Terms have been broken.

If you are in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services. We are a small project and cannot act as an emergency service.

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. To the fullest extent permitted by law we disclaim all warranties, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement, and quiet enjoyment.

We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free, that results will be accurate or complete, or that any defect will be corrected.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties. Where that is so, this section applies to the fullest extent those laws permit, and your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, nor for any loss of profits, data, goodwill, or reputation, arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service.

We are in particular not liable for any consequence of your reliance on a result, for any decision you take about another person on the basis of one, or for any claim brought against you by a person you looked up.

Where liability cannot lawfully be excluded, our total aggregate liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us to use the Service, which is nothing, or ten pounds sterling.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim, demand, loss, liability, or expense, including reasonable legal fees, arising from your use of the Service, your breach of these Terms, your violation of any law or of the rights of any third party, or any lookup you direct the Service to perform.

Our Privacy Policy explains what the Service records, how long it keeps it, and what rights you have. It forms part of these Terms. It also explains what someone who was searched using the Service can ask us to do.

Changes. We may update these Terms as the Service changes. The date at the top reflects the current version, and material changes will be announced in the support server before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the updated Terms.

Severability. If any provision is found unenforceable, it is severed and the rest remains in force.

No waiver. If we do not enforce a provision, that is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.

Assignment. You may not assign or transfer your rights under these Terms. We may assign ours to a successor of the project.

Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.

Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the operators of the Service are established, and the courts of that jurisdiction have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute, except that if you are a consumer you keep the benefit of any mandatory protections and the right to bring proceedings in the courts of your own country of residence.

Questions about these Terms, appeals against a revocation, and reports of misuse all go to the Goldberg support server.
